Growers Association The Dirranbandi Cotton Grower's Association was formed
in 1997 and consists of 19 full members and 14 Associate members. Approximately
22, 300ha of cotton was planted last season in our region and around 180, 000
bales produced. Objectives include:
· Representation of Cotton Growers in the Dirranbandi and Lower Balonne
Region. · Lobbying of various State and local government authorities
on all matters pertaining to the cotton growing industry. · Formulation
of guidelines and policy on matters affecting local cotton growers. ·
Promotion of fellowship amongst cotton growers and associated groups within our
region. · Education and training of growers and dissemination of information
to the community on matters relevant to our industry. · To encourage
growers and all industry members to observe and strive for Best Management Practices. Unique
Features: · All cotton in the Dirranbandi region is irrigated
and relies mainly on private irrigation infrastructure and water harvesting licences
for the supply of water. · Cotton growing is a relatively new industry
in the Dirranbandi region with the first crop grown in 1986. · All
properties have been developed adopting Best Management Practice guidelines. Community
involvement: · The cotton industry in our area employs about
200 permanent employees and around 1000 casual/part-time workers each season.
A lot of that labour is sourced locally providing many employment opportunities
for our rural community. · Our Association helps support many local
events such as the Dirranbandi Rodeo, School Speech Night, Dirranbandi Hospital
Fundraising Ball and the Police Legacy Child Safety handbook. · Many
growers have roles in other organizations in the town creating close links with
community activities. · As well as Baby bags at the Hospital for new-borns. Future
activities: · Supporting the landscaping of a new retirement
unit complex in the town. · A major 'Park Beautification' and Memorial
project for the Main Street of town.
